Tsuda University, a four-year women’s liberal arts university in Tokyo, Japan, announces the job opening for:
Assistant or Associate Professor in Communication Studies (with tenure)
Courses to be Taught: Specialized courses and seminars related to Communication Studies, as well as General English courses
Starting Date: April 1, 2027
Requirements
Qualifications:
- Specialization in Communication Studies, particularly research on media and popular culture from a transnational perspective
- Ph.D. in the above field already obtained or expected by the time of appointment
- Record of published scholarly work in the field (including works written in English)
- Excellent English proficiency and ability to teach courses in English
- Non-native Japanese speakers must have Japanese proficiency sufficient for university administrative duties
- Understanding of the founding principles of Tsuda University and willingness to actively contribute to undergraduate English education and graduate-level research training
- Willingness to actively engage in university-wide administrative duties, including committees and entrance examinations, in addition to regular departmental responsibilities

- Curriculum Vitae (any format; include teaching experience and courses taught)
- List of Research Achievements (clearly indicate whether each work was peer-reviewed; list all scholarly works and mark your three major publications)
- Three major publications (including at least one article written in English)
*If books or other materials cannot be submitted via Google Form, please send physical copies separately by mail. - Summary of the three major publications (for each publication: approximately 500 words in English and 800 characters in Japanese)
- Future research plan (approximately 500 words in English)
- Statement of teaching philosophy and aspirations for English education and communication studies education at Tsuda University (approximately 500 words in English)
- Proof of highest academic degree (copy of diploma, degree certificate, official transcript, etc.)

Selection Process:
First Screening: Document review (Shortlisted applicants will be notified by mid-June 2026)
Second Screening: Interview and mock teaching session (Scheduled for Saturday, June 27, 2026)
Shortlisted candidates will be asked to submit two letters of recommendation in advance. In principle, the second screening will be conducted at our Kodaira Campus. Transportation expenses are to be borne by the applicant. However, depending on circumstances, the interview may be conducted online. Final results will be notified directly to applicants after the final candidate has been selected.
Employment Conditions:
1. Working Hours: Estimated at 7 hours a day, under the category of Discretionary Labor System for Professional Work. Instructors of the graduate-level omnibus course Topics in Language Teaching may be required to hold classes during weekday evening hours.
2. Salary: Based on the salary of national civil servants.
3. Days Off: Saturdays, Sundays, Public Holidays, and Days Designated by the University. However, employees may be required to work on holidays for classes and other reasons.
4. Retirement Age: 68
5. Insurance: Employees will be enrolled in the Japan Private Schools Promotion and Mutual Aid Association, as well as employment insurance and workers' accident compensation insurance.
