About the Department/College
The Kitt School of Music at Northern Arizona University continues a proud tradition of training the next generation of music teachers, performers, and scholars for the State of Arizona and the Southwest. Kitt School of Music is a vibrant community within Northern Arizona University serving approximately 250 music majors and hundreds of music minors and non-music majors. The School offers three undergraduate degrees in music (Bachelor of Music in Performance, Bachelor of Music Education, Bachelor of Arts) and the Master of Music (seven concentrations including Instrumental Conducting). The position requires positive mentorship for students from a variety of backgrounds and ability levels, who are pursuing a broad range of careers, including education, performance, and liberal arts. Committed to a civil working and learning environment, NAU has earned a reputation as a university with all the features of a large institution but with a personal touch, with a faculty and staff dedicated to each student's success.
About the Position
The NAU Kitt School of Music seeks a dynamic, creative, collaborative, and dedicated conductor-educator to serve as Assistant Professor of Practice or Assistant Teaching Professor of Bands with an additional appointment as Associate Director of Bands.
This is a 9-month academic year appointment with additional summer pay related to the administrative appointment.
Responsibilities Include
- Conducting the Symphonic Band.
- Directing the NAU Lumberjack Marching Band and Jacks Pep Band.
- Teaching undergraduate conducting and courses in music education.
- Recruiting students to the band program.
- Assisting in the administration of the band program.
- Service and committee assignments consistent with all faculty appointments.
- Other possible assignments based on the successful candidate's secondary abilities.
Minimum Qualifications
Assistant Teaching Professor:
- Doctorate in Music (DMA, PhD, or equivalent) with specialization in conducting or related field at time of application.
- Three years of successful teaching at the university, community college, and/or high school level.
Assistant Professor of Practice:
- Master's degree in wind conducting or related field at time of application.
- Five years of wind conducting experience within a professional or academic setting.
- Three years of successful teaching at the university, community college, and/or high school level.
*A combination of related education, experience, and training may be used as an equivalent to the above Minimum Qualifications.
Preferred Qualifications
- Successful secondary teaching background.
- Proven excellence in marching band, wind conducting, ensemble performance, or other creative activity.
- Experience writing drill for marching band.
- Evidence of potential for continued scholarly/creative contribution to the profession.
- Demonstrated success recruiting at the collegiate level.
- Demonstrated commitment to and/or success in working with various populations on campus and in the community.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
- Ability to coordinate logistics for ensemble travel.
- Knowledge of current trends in pedagogy and repertoire programming for instrumental ensembles.
- Ability to write marching band drill and music arrangements for athletic bands.
Compensation
Budgeted salary is $60,000.
Pre-Employment Check
Northern Arizona University requires satisfactory results for the following: a criminal background investigation, an employment history verification and a degree verification (in some cases) prior to employment. You may also be required to complete a fingerprint background check. Notice of Availability of the Annual Fire and Security Report
Each year Northern Arizona University releases an Annual Security Report. The report is a result of a federal law known as the Clery Act. The report includes Clery reportable crime statistics for the three most recent completed calendar years and discloses procedures, practices and programs NAU uses to keep students and employees safe including how to report crimes or other emergencies occurring on campus. In addition, the Fire Safety Report is combined with the Annual Security Report for the NAU Flagstaff Mountain Campus as this campus has on-campus student housing. This report discloses fire safety policies and procedures related to on-campus student housing and statistics for fires that occurred in those facilities.
