Description
Assistant/Associate/Professor, Tenure Track (open rank) Department of Epidemiology
School of Public and Population Health
The University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston
The Department of Epidemiology at the University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) invites applications for an open-rank (Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor) tenure-track faculty position. We seek an accomplished scientist with a strong record of scholarly excellence, a collaborative research agenda, and a commitment to teaching and mentoring the next generation of public health leaders.
We are particularly interested in candidates with advanced methodological expertise in the analysis of complex population or health care data, causal inference methods, or the use of innovative data sources such as social media and digital trace data. Applicants should be grounded in a substantive area related to epidemiology that aligns with current departmental strengths, which include chronic disease epidemiology, social epidemiology/demography, and infectious disease epidemiology. Candidates with expertise in other complementary areas related to epidemiology are also encouraged to apply.
Successful applicants are expected to maintain an active, externally funded research program appropriate to rank, pursue new funding opportunities, and participate in collaborative, multidisciplinary grant activities. Faculty members contribute meaningfully to the department’s teaching mission and provide high-quality mentorship to graduate students and trainees. About the Department and School of Public and Population Health
The Department of Epidemiology is a growing department comprised of six full-time faculty members and 14 faculty members with secondary appointments. The department is housed within UTMB’s accredited School of Public and Population Health. The school was established in 2022 and includes 45 full-time faculty and four departments (Bioethics & Health Humanities, Biostatistics & Data Science, Epidemiology, Population Health and Health Disparities).
Since its founding, the school has secured nearly $50 million in external research funding and has demonstrated excellence across research, teaching, and service. The school offers five masters-level programs including a master’s in public health (MPH) and an MD-MPH program. It also offers three PhD programs. For more information, refer to www.utmb.edu/spph/.
The selected faculty member will have a unique opportunity to actively contribute to UTMB’s Center for Health and Clinical Outcomes Research (H-COR), a new university-level initiative serving as a catalyst for health and clinical outcomes research at the university. H-COR leverages UTMB's exceptional data infrastructure and multidisciplinary expertise across all five schools to provide expertise in methodologies, data analytics and statistics, grant proposal development, and infrastructure building. Through its collaborative framework, H-COR serves as a centralized hub to coordinate, accelerate, and translate outcomes research across the institution.

Be at the level of Assistant, Associate or Full Professor
Possess a PhD, MD, DrPH, or equivalent degree in epidemiology or an aligned field
Have a track record of funded research as PI or Co-I consistent with rank
Have demonstrated excellence in research through peer-reviewed publications
Have demonstrated abilities to teach and mentor at the graduate level consistent with rank
Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. Interested applicants should send a curriculum vitae and a letter of interest to Neil K. Mehta (nemehta@utmb.edu).
