The Centre for China Studies (CCS) and the Department of History (HIST) at The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) seek to co-appoint a faculty member to help further strengthen the study of modern and contemporary Chinese history in the global context. CCS, as an interdisciplinary research and teaching unit, and the History Department, offer programmes both at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels. We are looking for candidates with strong expertise in the history of modern and contemporary China, especially those who focus on China’s global interactions and linkages. The successful candidate should be able to teach courses in English to a diverse student body and is committed to interdisciplinary research and innovative pedagogy.

Applicants should have (i) a PhD degree in a relevant academic discipline; (ii) a clear research profile that contributes to and extends the existing strengths of the Centre; (iii) a strong record or potential of quality publications and grant applications; (iv) a strong dedication to teaching and student engagement. To be considered for appointment at the rank of Associate Professor, applicants should have achieved a high standing in the relevant research field and demonstrated academic and international professional leadership.

The appointment is expected to commence in August 2026. It will normally be made on contract basis for up to 3 years initially. Subject to performance and mutual agreement, the contract may lead to longer-term appointment or substantiation.

Applicants for the post of Assistant Professor should also arrange for three recommendation letters to be submitted directly from the referees to CCS at ccs@cuhk.edu.hk. Applicants for the post of Associate Professor should provide names and e-mail addresses of three referees, in addition to the application materials listed above.
