Associate/Full Professor and Division Chief of Vascular and Endovascular Surgery

The Division of Vascular and Endovascular Surgery within the Department of Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery at McGovern Medical School (MMS) at UTHealth Houston is seeking a full-time (1.0 FTE) Associate Professor or Professor (non-tenure clinical track) to lead a dynamic and growing division. This is a unique opportunity to advance a high-impact clinical program within the world-renowned Texas Medical Center while contributing to the department’s mission of excellence in patient care, education, research, and leadership. The selected candidate will provide strategic direction for the division, foster innovative clinical and research initiatives, and play a central role in training the next generation of vascular surgeons.
Under the leadership of nationally recognized Professor and Chair, Anthony L. Estrera, MD FACS, and in alignment with the Department of Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery at McGovern Medical School’s strategic priorities, the incoming Division Chief of Vascular and Endovascular Surgery will be responsible for defining and executing the vision and goals of a comprehensive, high-acuity vascular program. The Chief will lead, mentor, and support an accomplished group of faculties while guiding the education and professional development of the next generation of vascular surgeons.
The Division of Vascular and Endovascular Surgery delivers advanced care across a broad network of affiliated institutions, including Memorial Hermann–Texas Medical Center, the Harris Health System, and additional UTHealth Houston clinical partners. The Division provides the full spectrum of open and endovascular procedures, with strengths in complex aortic disease, peripheral vascular disease, cerebrovascular disease, trauma-related vascular care, and venous disorders. Clinical care is delivered through a highly collaborative, multidisciplinary model involving cardiology, cardiac surgery, general surgery, trauma surgery, thoracic surgery, interventional radiology, neurosurgery, vascular medicine, pediatrics, and other specialties across the Texas Medical Center.
The Division plays a central role in surgical education and training, overseeing accredited vascular surgery residency and fellowship programs. The Chief will ensure continued compliance with ACGME requirements while advancing innovation in surgical education, simulation, and mentorship. The position also carries responsibility for fostering a strong academic environment that supports medical students, residents, fellows, and junior faculty in scholarly and professional growth.
Research and scholarly activity are integral to the Division’s mission. The Chief will promote investigator-initiated clinical trials, translational research, outcomes research, and quality improvement initiatives, while encouraging collaboration across McGovern Medical School, UTHealth Houston’s academic enterprise, and the broader Texas Medical Center research ecosystem. Strong institutional support exists to expand research infrastructure, interdisciplinary performance improvement programs, and externally funded initiatives.
Administratively, the Chief will provide strategic oversight of the Division’s clinical operations, financial performance, and academic productivity, working closely with departmental and institutional leadership to ensure alignment with UTHealth Houston’s mission. The role requires visible leadership within the Texas Medical Center and active engagement at the regional, national, and international levels.
The ideal candidate will hold the rank of Associate Professor or Professor on the non-tenure clinical track and will bring demonstrated experience leading complex academic clinical programs. Candidates must possess an MD, DO, or equivalent degree; be board certified in Vascular Surgery by the American Board of Surgery; and be eligible for unrestricted Texas medical licensure and credentialing at affiliated institutions. A distinguished record of clinical excellence, scholarly achievement, funded research, and academic leadership is expected, along with a clear commitment to excellence, discovery, service, and mentorship.
Position Key Accountabilities:

- Provide visionary leadership for the position of Vascular and Endovascular Surgery.
- Develop and implement a strategic plan to expand and enhance the division’s national reputation in clinical care, education, and research.
- Recruit, mentor, and retain outstanding faculty, trainees, and staff.
- Promote a culture of collaboration, excellence, and professional growth.
Clinical Care
- Oversee the delivery of high-quality, patient-centered vascular surgical services across affiliated hospitals, including Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center, Harris Health System, and other UTHealth Houston partners.
- Expand clinical programs in open and endovascular surgery, complex aortic disease, peripheral vascular disease, cerebrovascular disease, vascular trauma, and venous disorders.
- Foster multidisciplinary collaboration with cardiology, cardiac surgery, general surgery, trauma surgery, thoracic surgery, vascular medicine, pediatrics, interventional radiology, neurosurgery, and other specialties.
Education & Training
- Direct the vascular surgery residency and fellowship training programs, ensuring compliance with ACGME requirements.
- Support innovation in surgical education and simulation.
- Mentor medical students, residents, fellows, and junior faculty in academic career development.
Research & Scholarship
- Encourage and support investigator-initiated clinical trials, translational research, and outcomes studies in vascular and endovascular surgery.
- Promote collaboration within McGovern Medical School, UTHealth Houston Schools, the Texas Medical Center’s rich research environment, state, national, and international collaborations.
- Secure extramural research funding and foster scholarly productivity.
- Assuring interdisciplinary performance improvement programs are active, maintained, and ongoing. Following up to ensure that complaints have been satisfactorily handled. Collaborating to maintain a focus on providing excellent clinical services
Administration
- Manage the division’s financial performance, clinical operations, and academic productivity.
- Partner with departmental and institutional leadership to align with UTHealth Houston’s mission and goals.
- Serve as a visible leader within the Texas Medical Center, nationally, and internationally.
Qualifications include:
- MD, DO, or equivalent degree
- American Board of Surgery, certification in Vascular Surgery.
- Eligible for unrestricted Texas medical license.
- Distinguished record of clinical excellence, scholarly achievement, and funded research.
- Demonstrated leadership experience in an academic medical center.
