Description
UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH CAROLINA
Molinaroli College of Engineering and Computing – Department of Chemical Engineering
Tenured or Tenure-Track Faculty Position – Open Rank
The Molinaroli College of Engineering and Computing at the University of South Carolina is continuing to expand its tenured and tenure-track ranks significantly. As part of this growth, the Department of Chemical Engineering seeks to add two dynamic tenured or tenure-track faculty members to begin in Fall 2026. Applicants at all ranks are encouraged to apply. Applicants for the rank of Assistant Professor must possess a Ph.D. degree in chemical engineering or a related field by the time of appointment and demonstrate potential for excellence in teaching and research; applicants for the rank of Associate Professor and Full Professor must also have years of relevant academic experience commensurate with academic policy by the time of appointment, with a strong, sustained record of excellence in teaching and research.
We seek candidates whose expertise aligns with the core strengths of the Department, as well as cross- cutting initiatives within the Molinaroli College. Of particular interest for this search are two areas: advanced batteries and separations. Successful candidates will be expected to develop and sustain an internationally recognized research program.
Specific to batteries, the state of SC has seen a large amount of private investment (>$10B) in battery development and manufacturing, which is expected to create 10,000+ jobs over the next decade. USC is building from our already strong team in this area (18 faculty) and supporting this industry through activities within the newly formed Carolina Institute for Battery Innovation (CIBI). Specific research areas of interest for this search include: i) electrochemical modeling, preferably including advanced machine learning and AI; ii) battery safety and reliability; iii) novel approaches to recycling; and iv) new chemistries and active materials.
Driving our interest in growing our separations faculty is USC’s partnership in the management and operation of the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Savannah River National Laboratory (SRNL). The goal of this partnership is to expand collaborative research partnerships and develop the future workforce for SRNL and ecosystem partners. Therefore, the Department is interested in applicants whose research programs will support DOE priorities in energy security, national security, and a circular economy. Joint appointments with SRNL may be considered.
Review of applications will begin on December 1st, 2025, and continue until the positions are filled. The expected start date is August 16, 2026. Applicants must apply with the following information: (1) a letter of intent, (2) curriculum vitae, (3) a concise description of research and teaching plans, and (4) names and contact information of at least three references. Candidates should apply via USCJobs. The specific link for the battery position is https://uscjobs.sc.edu/postings/188088, while all others should apply via https://uscjobs.sc.edu/postings/191233.
