University of PittsburghVisiting Assistant Professor of Infant Mental Health
Position: Visiting Assistant Professor of Practice in appointment-stream
Appointment: Nine-month, full-time (in appointment stream; starting January 2026)
The University of Pittsburgh School of Education Applied Developmental Psychology program seeks a dynamic and experienced infant and early childhood mental health professional to serve as Visiting Faculty for a one-year appointment to support the development and launch of our new online Master of Science in Infant and Early Childhood Mental Health (MS-IECMH) program. This is an exceptional opportunity to shape a cutting-edge graduate program that will prepare the next generation of IECMH practitioners, with particular emphasis on relationship-based intervention, family coaching, and reflective practice.
The Visiting Faculty member will work collaboratively with program leadership to design course content, develop curriculum materials, establish community partnerships, and support initial program implementation. This position offers significant creative input and the opportunity to leave a lasting impact on an innovative program serving families and young children.
Required Qualifications:
- Doctoral degree (PhD, PsyD, DSW, or EdD) or ABD status in psychology, social work, counseling, child development, or a closely related field
- Minimum 3 years of direct clinical experience in infant and early childhood mental health
- Demonstrated expertise in at least two of the following areas:
- Relationship-based interventions (e.g., CPP, Circle of Security, dyadic and video interaction approaches)
- Family coaching and capacity-building approaches
- Infant/toddler mental health consultation
- Early intervention (Part C) and/or Home Visiting service delivery
- Assessment and observation in IECMH
- Strong understanding of reflective practice and supervision in IECMH
- Experience teaching at the graduate level or providing professional training
- Effective written and verbal communication skills
- Commitment to creating an inclusive and welcoming environment in working with young children and families.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Endorsement as an Infant/Early Childhood Mental Health Mentor through the Alliance for the Advancement of Infant Mental Health (or other state equivalent)
- Training and experience in Family-Guided Routines-Based Intervention (FGRBI) or similar coaching models (e.g., FAN, primary coaching)
- Experience with online course design and learning management systems
- Demonstrated success in building community partnerships and field placement networks
- Knowledge of the DC:0-5 diagnostic classification system
- Experience with program development, accreditation, or evaluation
- Bilingual/multilingual abilities
- Publication record in IECMH or related fields
- Grant writing experience in infant and early childhood mental health
