Description
University of Maine
Department of Mathematics and Statistics
We invite applications for the inaugural Spofford Harris Kimball endowed chair in Mathematics. The successful candidate will be appointed to a regular tenured faculty position and will hold the Spofford Harris Kimball Chair for an initial period of five years, with renewal contingent on satisfactory performance through the standard institutional evaluation process. This is an academic year position, most likely at the rank of Professor, although an appointment at the rank of Associate Professor is also possible depending on the candidate’s experience. The anticipated start date is September 1, 2026.
The successful candidate will be a pure or applied mathematician with an outstanding record of scholarly activity, teaching, and advising. Proven experience in attracting external funding is strongly preferred, commensurate with rank. The department is especially interested in candidates who can both enhance our present activities and bring additional stimulus to our programs; please address this in your cover letter. Some preference may also be given to applicants working in probability or mathematical statistics, but all areas of pure or applied mathematics in which the department is active will be considered. We welcome applications from candidates who can contribute to an inclusive experience for a student body that reflects the university’s commitment to non-discrimination.
A Ph.D. in Mathematics or Statistics or an equivalent degree is required for consideration. Demonstrated effective teaching, and effective written and oral communication skills are also required. The Kimball Chair carries a reduced teaching load, expected ordinarily to be one class per semester. Responsibilities include undergraduate and graduate teaching; advising and recruitment of students; directing undergraduate projects and graduate theses; maintaining a productive program of research and other scholarly activity, independently and collaboratively, including the pursuit of external funding for research; and engaging in university and professional service. Overall, the Kimball Chair should systematically engage in activities that enhance the visibility, reputation, and productivity of the department. The position comes with an annual supplemental budget to be spent by the Kimball Chair in service of these goals.
To apply, submit a cover letter, a curriculum vitae, copies of student teaching evaluations from the four most recent terms taught, and contact information for three professional references. Your cover letter should describe your background and how you meet the job requirements as described above. All materials must be submitted both through mathjobs, and via the Oracle Recruiting webpage where furtherinstructions can be found.
Review of applications will begin November 20, 2025.
