Description
The School of Social Work (SSW) in the Watts College of Public Service and Community Solutions at Arizona State University invites applications for two full-time, benefits-eligible, non-tenure-track Assistant Teaching Professor positions, with 9 month appointments beginning August 16, 2026. This is a teaching-focused role whose primary responsibilities include excellence in instruction, course and curriculum development, student mentorship, service to the School and community, and active engagement in School activities and governance.
A successful candidate will be able to teach a substantial course load within our BSW and MSW programs across modalities, mentor students and adjunct instructors, contribute to program assessment and accreditation-related activities, and participate actively in School life through committee service, program events, and other collaborative initiatives. Teaching will occur in person at ASU’s Phoenix-area campuses and online, both asynchronously and synchronously via Zoom.
About the School
ASU’s School of Social Work is one of the largest and most comprehensive social work programs in the country, serving more than 2,700 students across multiple locations, including downtown Phoenix, West Phoenix, Tucson, and Yuma, as well as through synchronous and asynchronous online programs. The School’s educational programs include in-person, online asynchronous and online synchronous BSW and MSW programs, with MSW concentrations in Advanced Generalist, Advanced Direct Practice, and Policy, Administration and Community Practice. Requirements
Essential Functions
Teach BSW and MSW courses in person, online synchronous, and online asynchronous formats (typically four per semester).
Actively mentor and engage with students in person and online.
Collaborate closely with full-time and part-time faculty in course development and delivery.
Lead and contribute to course and curriculum development aligned with CSWE requirements and program learning outcomes.
Participate in program assessment, curriculum mapping, and accreditation-related activities.
Engage in teaching leadership within the School, University, and profession, including innovating and refining teaching practices.
Serve actively on School and College committees and contribute to program and student events.
Stay current with emerging trends, research, and best practices in social work and social work education.
Maintain active engagement with applied social work practice and professional communities to inform teaching and enhance program relevance.
Required Qualifications
Master of Social Work (MSW) from a Council on Social Work Education (CSWE)-accredited program by time of appointment.
PhD in social work or a related field, or an applied practice doctorate (e.g., DSW) in social work or a closely related field by time of appointment.
Minimum of three years post-MSW social work practice experience.
Minimum of two years of post-secondary teaching experience in social work or a related discipline.
Desired Qualifications
Five or more years of post-MSW social work practice experience.
Three or more years of teaching experience in CSWE-accredited BSW and/or MSW programs.
Graduate degree(s) from ASU’s peer institutions or comparable research universities.
Ability to teach across a broad range of foundational and advanced curriculum areas, including generalist, clinical, or macro practice; human behavior in the social environment (micro or macro); policy; and/or research.
Familiarity with CSWE competencies, assessment, and accreditation processes.
Experience developing, coordinating, and/or managing curriculum within accredited programs.
Demonstrated effectiveness in teaching across multiple modalities (e.g. in-person, online synchronous, online asynchronous, hybrid).
Evidence of strong teaching performance, including teaching in high-enrollment courses, and/or significant curriculum development.
Experience with innovative teaching methods and/or contributions to pedagogy (e.g., integrating new technology or methods in instruction, leading study abroad programs, or conducting scholarship on teaching and learning).
Extensive experience teaching with learning management systems (e.g., Canvas) and digital instructional tools.
Record of professional service to the social work profession, applied scholarship, and/or community engagement.
Proficiency with learning management systems (e.g., Canvas) and digital instructional tools.
Ability to teach across several foundational and advanced curriculum areas, including generalist, clinical, or macro practice; HBSE (micro or macro); policy; or research.
Practice experience in one or more of the following: generalist, clinical, or macro practice; substance use; health/mental health; child wellbeing; economic and housing stability; or work with people with disabilities, older adults, refugees and immigrants, Indigenous populations, or other historically underserved communities.
Demonstrated experience or potential for on-campus and online engagement with students and the School of Social Work community.
Demonstrated alignment with, and commitment to, the principles expressed in the ASU Charter, including access, inclusion, and community impact.
