Description
The Hartt School, a conservatory of Music, Dance, and Theatre at the University of Hartford, invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track Assistant/Associate/Full Professor of Conducting and Director of Bands and Wind Ensembles beginning August 2026. The next Director of Bands and Wind Ensembles will provide a comprehensive, progressive vision and administrative leadership of Hartt’s wind, bands, and contemporary ensembles. In addition, the position includes teaching undergraduate and/or graduate courses in conducting and additional courses according to candidate’s strengths.
Requirements
1. Create a comprehensive, progressive vision for, and provide administrative leadership of, all activities associated with the Hartt Wind Ensemble, Symphony Band, and Hartt’s contemporary ensemble Foot in the Door.
2. Conduct, oversee, and handle all budgeting for the Hartt Wind Ensemble, Symphony Band, and Foot in the Door Ensemble.
3. Actively engage in student recruitment and retention as well as curriculum development and assessment.
4. Teach undergraduate and/or graduate courses in conducting and additional courses according to candidate’s strengths.
5. Adjudicate auditions and juries; advise students; attend faculty meetings; and serve on departmental, school, and university committees.
6. Remain active in creative/scholarly pursuits, developing/maintaining a national and international profile as a band, wind, and ensemble conductor and educator and seek peer reviews, as appropriate—all as expected for the successful pursuit of tenure and promotion.
7. Lead collaborative artistic initiatives within and beyond The Hartt School and cultivate and maintain professional relationships with band, wind, and ensemble musicians in schools and universities in the region.
