- Visiting Assistant Professor/Instructor of Kinesiology
Description
Full-time, visiting position available September 1, 2026. This is a one-year visiting appointment with the possibility of reappointment for an additional one to two years, dependent upon satisfactory performance and department needs. Must be available to work Monday-Friday, 8:00am-5:00pm, with occasional evening commitments or night classes possible. Academic schedule is September to May. Classes begin on September 8. New Faculty Orientation will take place on September 1 and 2. Summer teaching is available depending on student enrollment.
The Department of Kinesiology at Pacific Lutheran University seeks an individual who can contribute to a strong, cohesive team and a dynamic, respected academic program. The ideal candidate must demonstrate a clear commitment to excellence in teaching at the undergraduate level, and to student-faculty collaboration. Candidates with both strong academic backgrounds as well as practitioner experience and credentials are preferred. The department seeks a candidate who can contribute diverse perspectives and experiences and whose educational training, scholarly pursuits, practitioner and/or personal experiences will enrich our department’s commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion.
The ideal candidate will be an excellent teacher with an interest in, and ability to, work with undergraduate students across an array of interests in the field. The successful candidate will contribute to the department’s core kinesiology curriculum and teach courses that connect kinesiology with health promotion and community wellness, in particular.
Courses will be assigned based on expertise, course availability, and need. There is 24-credit teaching responsibility for the academic year. All department faculty are expected to contribute to the General Education Physical Activity curriculum, First Year Experience Program, or January term as needed. In addition, undergraduate advising may be requested.
Requirements
- Strong disciplinary knowledge base in areas related to health and fitness promotion, public health education, and/or exercise science.
- Knowledge of effective teaching techniques and strategies, including inclusive teaching practices.
- Ability to contribute to fostering diversity of the campus, curriculum, and/or discipline.
- Strong written and oral communication skills.
- Commitment to excellence in teaching at the undergraduate level and to student faculty collaboration and scholarship.
- Strong work ethic and organizational skills.
- Professional orientation and disposition.
- Willingness to collaborate and engage with other department and university faculty.
- ABD or Master’s degree in Kinesiology, Exercise Science, Public Health, or a closely related field required by September 1, 2026 for appointment at the Visiting Instructor Rank. Ph.D. in Kinesiology, Exercise Science, Public Health, or a closely related field required by September 1, 2026 for appointment at the Visiting Assistant Professor rank.
- Applicant must be legally eligible to work in the United States on hire date AND legally authorized to work in the United States for Pacific Lutheran University without sponsorship
Preferred Qualifications:
- Ph.D. in Kinesiology, Exercise Science, Public Health or a closely related field.
Higher education teaching experience. - One or more professional certifications related to health and fitness or exercise science, preferably through the American College of Sports Medicine, National Commission for Health Education Credentialing, Inc or other professional organization(s).
- Work experience in fields related to health education, health and fitness, nutrition, and/or exercise science.
